Goal-directed psychology for coaching and psychotherapy

Introduction.

.

Below I will give a short explanation of the usefulness of my model and method Arc of Essentials specially tailored for the practice of coaching, psychotherapy, and other types of guidance or assistance for personal needs of persons.

Model

Arc of Essentials ©

This model is, in short, built up as a synthesis of psychology and logic.
It is intended to promote an optimal balance between apparent contradictions such as 'feeling' and 'intellect', ' empathy' and 'efficiency', 'subjective' and 'objective', etc .. In my experience, this is nowadays an important point for many people in their lives, both private and in work. Considering the explosive increase in information, both in terms of quantity, complexity and 'hybrid' content.
My model is intended to offer a contemporary addition to existing knowledge and methodology: by much more clarification of psychological ideas and much more practical applicability of logical techniques.

Method

Goal-directed psychology

The main challenge of coaching, therapy etc. has always been for me: helping the client to help himself. The trick thereby is to realize a result in cooperation that is to the client's liking - and that it is ecological: in harmony with the person and his or her environment, and sustainable: lasting in the longer term. With this in mind, I have developed a method of 'Goal-directed Psychology'.
( Method 'Goal-Directed Psychology' ©, short description).
The starting point here is that every case is absolutely unique in terms of content: person (or social system), situation and problem. At the same time, general principles are working to take into account and, where possible, to be used.

The first question in goal-directed coaching / therapy concerns the needs and goals of the client(s). What I always noticed is that people almost always ask for help for two main points:
• They do not feel optimal: thus they want to improve the quality of their emotions, or more in general, their subjective experience in certain ways.
• They want to change their functioning, but this turns out to be difficult: thus they want to strengthen their self-management, or 'free will' in certain ways.
That is why the concepts of subjective awareness and free will are central to my model ' Psychology of subjective experience'.

Of course, these phenomena are not logical in themselves. To understand them, they require complex processes that are not entirely analytical but also involve 'sensitive' or 'intuitive' aspects like empathy, compassion, respect, integrity etc.. But it is quite logical to put them first in psychology. I tried therefore to provide them of a solid filosophical basis.

Dimensions of information in human experience.

In order to well understand the issues at hand, to agree on the goal outcomes and to determine the designated method, of course a multitude of information is needed, originating from direct observations combined with a broad arsenal of experiences and insights. This information has basically dealing with all conceivable aspects of the human world of experience. She is therefore typically of a multiple nature: psychological, logical, causal and communicative/ linguistic.

1.

Psychic process.

The first phase of coaching / therapy concerns the question about the nature and causes of the problem: history and diagnostics. To me this does not primarily mean 'classifying' and ' labeling' of some 'disorder', but to understanding the process of origination and continuation of the problem. In this, it is important to look at all important and determining factors in psychological functioning.
For that aim I developed a 'Ten Factor Model'. This model stays as close as possible to the structure of the senses, nervous system and brain: physical anatomy, causal functioning (functions), and the flow of information flows - as a co-determining factor for consciousness and self-management.

2.

Information and logic.

Usually we get a lot of data from the person, of very different nature. To clarify, organize, combine and make of all this information, in the most reliable way possible, it is necessary to apply logic accurately. For that I made a selection from logic: method 'Practical logic'.

3.

Causal analysis.

Based on the diagnostics and empathic understandings, the question is which intervention will produce the desired result. Goal-directedness also means: to estimate in advance to what extent a desired result is really feasible.
Next, it is important that the process is as efficient and effective as possible, but also safe and pleasant. This all revolves around the question of which causes will lead to which consequences, both internally and externally. This requires mastery of causal analysis. This is therefore also a crucial module in my model.

4.

Communication and language use.

Finally, we want a good exchange of information with the client, both with regard to 'irrational' as well as 'rational' content.
• In diagnostics: expressions of language and non-verbal expressions provide a lot of information about one's inner processes.
• At intervention: internal processes can be approached and influenced.

Here I apply a method that I call 'the Art of Non-manipulation', which also offers guidelines in therapy for partner-relationship, family, etc.. This is part of the extensive method 'Psychological language analysis'.
( Method 'Psychological Language Analysis' ©, short description: ).

During the process of coaching / therapy, the goals set and the method chosen can of course be adjusted at any time, based on feedback information, and be refined and optimized.

As said, the above is only a very concise description, which is limited to the application for coaching and therapy.
If you have questions or are curious about more, please let me know and I will send answers and additions.

With kind regards,
Cees van der Velde.
